The community of San Miguel del Bala lies on the edge of Madidi National Park and its members belong to the Tacana people, who have lived in the vast Amazon forest of Madidi since pre-Columbian times.
Throughout their history the Tacana resisted the incursions of the Inca empire by taking refuge in the forest and, during colonial times, adapted by creating trade networks. Over time they understood that restrictions on hunting and fishing, together with logging pressure in the area, threatened their way of life unless they adapted to a changing world.
The families of San Miguel chose to use the forest sustainably and to launch the San Miguel del Bala ecotourism project, one of the pioneering community tourism ventures in Bolivia. The community owns the lodge, shares its culture, cares for the environment and benefits from tourism income.
Besides tourism, community members work in fishing, controlled hunting, farming, natural medicine and handicrafts.
